President Andrzej Duda stresses the urgency to end Russian aggression in Ukraine and secure lasting peace through robust international dialogue and regional cooperation.
Negotiations and International Involvement
President Andrzej Duda emphasized that the primary goal is to stop the loss of lives, end Russian aggression, and establish a lasting peace that secures not only Ukraine but also other nations—including NATO’s eastern flank. Following his meeting with Latvian President Edgars Rinkeviczs, Duda highlighted that ongoing discussions led by the American administration and President Donald Trump are essentially preparations for future negotiations. “I hope that these will indeed be negotiations between Russia and Ukraine that end Russian aggression and that they will take place with the participation of the United States, because it is currently being steered by President Donald Trump,” he stated. Duda also noted, “There are various offers on the table for Ukraine.”
Strengthening Security and Regional Cooperation
Latvian President Rinkeviczs underlined the strong strategic partnership between Latvia and Poland, noting Poland’s vital role in initiatives such as Baltic Air Policing and the synchronization of the Baltic states’ energy networks with Europe. He pointed to repeated incidents involving the disruption of submarine cables by tankers transporting Russian oil, stressing the need for enhanced cooperation among Baltic Sea nations. Rinkeviczs also mentioned that both Latvia and Poland are increasing their defense spending—with Latvia aiming for 4% of GDP now and 5% by 2028—to build genuine defense capabilities. “Peace must be fair and long-lasting. Of course, it is easy to say, but difficult to achieve,” he acknowledged, adding that only by focusing on shared interests can a solid and enduring resolution be reached.
