President Andrzej Duda issued a firm response to Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s recent comments suggesting a recount of votes in the presidential election. In a post on platform X, the President called on the Civic Platform leader to refrain from provocations and to respect the democratic choice of the Polish people.
The exchange began with a post by Donald Tusk, in which he addressed President Andrzej Duda, President-elect Karol Nawrocki, and Law and Justice (PiS) Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński. The Prime Minister wrote:
“Gentlemen Andrzej Duda, Karol Nawrocki, and Jarosław Kaczyński – aren’t you at least a little curious to know the real election results? Of course you are. And as we all know, those who have nothing to hide have nothing to fear.”
President Duda responded strongly to these insinuations. “Mr. Donald Tusk and his associates simply cannot come to terms with their loss in the presidential election,” he wrote. He emphasized that a margin of 370,000 votes is unequivocal and that the issue lies in the mindset of his political opponents. “You believe you’re entitled to win—period. What you’re doing now is nothing more than throwing a tantrum,” he remarked.
President Duda also accused the Prime Minister of hypocrisy, pointing out that it was the current ruling coalition that appointed members to electoral commissions and the National Electoral Commission. “You staffed every electoral commission with your own representatives and trusted party members. You selected the current members of the National Electoral Commission,” he wrote. He rhetorically questioned whether all of them—along with the polling agencies—had conspired to ensure the defeat of the coalition’s candidate.
The President declared that he is not curious about the results—because he already knows them. They have been officially announced by the National Electoral Commission. He added that leaders from around the world also recognize these results, having extended congratulations to President-elect Karol Nawrocki. These congratulations came from, among others, the leaders of the United States, Germany, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania.
Further emphasizing his role as the guardian of national security and the continuity of state authority, President Duda directed a stern warning at Donald Tusk:
“Stay away from the presidential election ballots! I have no doubt whatsoever that you must not be allowed to so much as touch the votes cast by our citizens.” He underscored that the verification of election results lies exclusively within the competence of the Supreme Court and the National Electoral Commission. He also reminded Tusk that it is “the very same Chamber of the Supreme Court that validated the election result which enabled your current government. The same one that allowed you to become Prime Minister.”
In conclusion, President Duda called for an end to the political conflict:
“Mr. Tusk, I urge you and your colleagues to stop the provocations, falsehoods, and pressure. This does not serve Poland or the sense of security of our citizens. One must know how to lose with dignity and respect the rules of democracy.”
