President-Elect Announces Meeting with Zelensky: “Poland and Ukraine Share Many Common Interests”

President-elect Karol Nawrocki stated that a meeting between him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will definitely take place. “As president, I will visit all our neighbors, and Ukraine is one of them,” he added. He also noted that Poland and Ukraine have many common interests.

Karol Nawrocki told Polsat News that a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine will “certainly take place as part of an appropriate series of meetings.” He emphasized, “Of course, Ukraine, which is in a state of war, is also our neighbor, and I will visit all our neighbors as the President of Poland.”

When asked whether he would like to speak with Zelensky, Nawrocki replied that he will have to speak with him.

“Poland and Ukraine share many common interests and objectives. There are also issues that, to this day, remain unresolved and do not meet the expectations or sentiments of Poles—such as the matter of exhumations in Volhynia. Therefore, we will, of course, have to address regional matters in a spirit of partnership, including with President Zelensky,” the president-elect remarked.

Asked whether he would revise his views on Ukraine—namely his opposition to its accession to NATO and the EU—Nawrocki said that currently there is no possibility for Ukraine to join NATO because, as he pointed out, the country is at war. He reiterated his opposition to Ukraine’s unconditional entry into the European Union.

“Many countries, including Poland, waited for years to meet the specific requirements of the European Union in order to become a member,” Nawrocki emphasized.

The president-elect also stated that there is no doubt “that in a geopolitical sense, recognizing Poland’s strategic needs, we require cooperation with Ukraine.” But he added that he maintains his view that this cooperation should take place on a partnership basis.
