President Nawrocki: “Andrzej Poczobut is a hero and a man of unwavering spirit”

“Andrzej Poczobut is a hero and a man of unwavering spirit. He is a steadfast man who, for the sake of Polish identity, for his commitment to historical truth, for the truth about the soldiers of the Home Army, for the fight for human rights and for democracy under the Lukashenko regime, was ready to go to prison – he did not flee. He went to prison, spent years there, and returned as a victor, as someone who shows that the suffering you experienced has a deep meaning and also builds the strength of the national community,” said today President of the Republic of Poland Karol Nawrocki during the ceremony of awarding state decorations.

Today, the President of the Republic of Poland presented Andrzej Poczobut with the Order of the White Eagle, awarded to him on Independence Day in 2025.

“You are well aware that before I became President of the Republic of Poland, I served as President of the Institute of National Remembrance. I know the value of the words heroism and steadfastness – I have worked in this field for many years and understand the responsibility of using such words. And I do not hesitate, as a historian and former President of the Institute of National Remembrance, to say that Andrzej Poczobut is a hero and a man of unwavering spirit. He is a steadfast man who, for the sake of Polish identity, for his commitment to historical truth, for the truth about the soldiers of the Home Army, for the fight for human rights and for democracy under the Lukashenko regime, was ready to go to prison – he did not flee. He went to prison, spent years there, and returned as a victor, as someone who shows that the suffering you experienced has a deep meaning and also builds the strength of the national community,” said President Karol Nawrocki.

“As President of the Republic of Poland, inspired by the image you have painted today – of a courageous, free, and united Poland, a Poland of artistic and creative depth, a Poland so brave, a Poland that is sensitive, and a Poland that will never surrender its freedom – I report to the authors of the Constitution of May 3 that Poland is in good hands. Long live Poland,” said President Nawrocki about all those decorated today.

The Order of the White Eagle was also awarded to:

  • Agnieszka Duczmal-Jaroszewska
  • Lech Majewski
  • Hanna Łukowska-Karniej

Meanwhile, the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta was awarded to Lt. Col. Jakub Nowakowski “Tomek” and Dr. Halina Pyz.
