President Karol Nawrocki supports continued assistance for Ukraine in its fight against the Russian Federation, according to his spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz. Speaking on TV Republika’s program First Morning Interview, Leśkiewicz stressed that while Poland should continue supporting Kyiv, it must also firmly pursue its own national interests.
His comments came after a new IBRiS poll for the daily Rzeczpospolita found that 52 percent of Poles still support providing military aid to Ukraine. Although a majority remains in favor, public support has declined significantly since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, when approval reached as high as 77.5 percent.
Leśkiewicz made it clear that President Nawrocki believes Poland should continue helping Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression.
“Ukraine should certainly be supported in its fight against the Russian Federation,” he said.
At the same time, the presidential spokesperson argued that Kyiv should take steps to improve its relations with Warsaw, particularly on unresolved historical issues.
“Pressure should be applied, and everything should be done to encourage the Ukrainians to change their approach to historical matters, including the Volhynia massacre, as well as permits for search operations and exhumations. We expect the Polish government to support the President in this area rather than obstruct his efforts,” Leśkiewicz said during the interview.
The remarks reflect President Nawrocki’s position that continued military support for Ukraine should go hand in hand with progress on bilateral issues that remain important for Poland, especially those concerning historical reconciliation and cooperation over the exhumation of Polish victims of the Volhynia massacres.
