President Karol Nawrocki is preparing for Tuesday’s visit to Berlin. He announced that one of the topics will be World War II reparations for Poland. Radosław Sikorski is already speaking of a “hopeless” legal situation and declaring that “we will not receive reparations,” while wishing the head of state “good luck.”
“On Monday I am going to Berlin to remind them of the necessity of paying reparations,” said Karol Nawrocki to participants of the Extraordinary Congress of Gazeta Polska Clubs.
“We are partners with Germany in trade and the economy. We are together in NATO, in the European Union, we share a border. But nothing has expired. There are issues we must resolve for the clarity of our mutual relations and our common future. The president is the voice of Polish men and women – that cannot change. Your reaction and your decision to elect me as head of the Polish state is proof that this issue is extremely important for us,” assured the president.
Diversionary Diplomacy
Radosław Sikorski has already begun “supporting” the head of state on the eve of his meeting with German leaders in Berlin, wishing him “good luck” in obtaining reparations from Germany.
Speaking on TOK FM radio with Dominika Wielowieyska, the foreign minister said that “PiS talked about this over and over again for 8 years,” and that former president Andrzej Duda had failed to achieve this in 10 years. “The legal situation is not good, in fact hopeless, so it is only honest to tell the nation that unfortunately we will not receive reparations,” emphasized Sikorski.
He also noted that reparations owed to Poland after World War II were appropriated by the Soviet Union.
