President’s Office: Charges Against Head of National Security Bureau Politically Motivated

On Friday, the prosecution submitted an indictment to the court against former Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczak, Head of the National Security Bureau (BBN) Sławomir Cenckiewicz, and two former associates of the former Minister of Defense. The case concerns the disclosure in 2023 of excerpts from Poland’s military defense plan, code-named “Warta.”Presidential spokesperson Dr. Rafał Leśkiewicz addressed the matter in a special statement.

“The decision of the District Prosecutor’s Office to submit an indictment against the Head of the National Security Bureau, Professor Sławomir Cenckiewicz, is an action driven solely by political motives, intended to obstruct the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, in the exercise of the highest office in the Polish state,”

the spokesperson’s statement reads.

Dr. Leśkiewicz wrote that the actions of the prosecution should be regarded as “revenge by individuals connected with the current ruling establishment, for the fact that Professor Cenckiewicz, for years, studied the history of the communist special services and the Polish People’s Army, courageously and reliably defended the security of the Republic of Poland, fought against Russian influence, and above all, revealed to the public the truth about the pro-Russian turn in policy during the first two governments of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.”

The spokesperson also expressed doubts about the investigation being conducted by the prosecution, pointing to suspicions of violations of the law during the course of the investigation. Two formal notifications were filed in this matter. They were submitted to the prosecution and the Internal Security Agency (ABW), authored by the current head of the National Security Bureau, Professor Cenckiewicz.

“It should be emphasized that the very act of legally and procedurally declassifying, and later making public, excerpts from the archival Warta Operational Plan for the Use of the Armed Forces (PUSZ) from 2011 revealed the concessions the authorities at the time were willing to make regarding the security of Polish citizens. Such an approach to planning the defense of the territory of the Republic of Poland was inconsistent not only with the then National Security Strategy of the Republic of Poland but also stood in contradiction with the principles of the defense doctrine and NATO contingency plans,”

Leśkiewicz noted.
