Problems of Polish Diplomacy. Przydacz: “It’s high time for Sikorski to implement Plan B”

“Minister Sikorski said it directly during the Sejm Foreign Affairs Committee that his only solution to the situation just two months ago was the plan to have Rafał Trzaskowski elected President of the Republic of Poland. I think it’s high time for Minister Sikorski to implement Plan B, because his Plan A has not worked in any way,” said Marcin Przydacz, head of the Bureau of International Policy at the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, regarding the ambassadorial nomination for Bogdan Klich.

In March 2024, the head of the MFA (MSZ), Radosław Sikorski, without the required approval of the President of the Republic of Poland, decided that over 50 Polish ambassadors would end their missions, and that more than a dozen candidacies submitted for approval by the previous leadership of the ministry would be withdrawn.

So far, the leadership of the MFA has appointed 58 heads of Polish diplomatic missions, including 22 ambassadors designated by the President of the Republic of Poland and 36 mission heads with the rank of chargé d’affaires.

Karol Nawrocki declared that he would not sign the ambassadorial nomination for, among others, Bogdan Klich (currently heading the mission in the USA) and Ryszard Schnepf (head of the mission in Italy). As he emphasized, he has many contacts in the USA and knows that Klich, who runs the Polish mission in Washington as chargé d’affaires, “is not able to safeguard Poland’s interests.”

The President of the Republic of Poland announced that “there will be no agreement regarding these two names”, although he is ready to talk to the MFA chief about many other candidates.

“The key lies with the Chancellery of the Prime Minister”

Today, during a press briefing, Marcin Przydacz, head of the Bureau of International Policy at the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, was asked about the downgraded rank of Poland’s representation in the USA.

“The key to solving the situation related to the paralysis of the Polish mission in Washington lies with the Chancellery of the Prime Minister (KPRM). It is the Prime Minister who must make the decision in this matter. Various talks are taking place, because we believe that for the good of Poland and the effectiveness of our diplomacy, concrete decisions must be made, and we will encourage the government side to do so. As we all know, the head of the mission in Washington is KO politician Bogdan Klich. At such a crucial moment, we believe – and the President also believes – that we need a good Polish ambassador there, and Mr. Bogdan Klich is not such a person,” Przydacz said.

“For many, many months, in dozens of Polish missions, due to what I believe was an unjustified decision – and a purely political decision – of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, the Polish foreign service has been ineffective, especially at the ambassadorial level. We believe this situation must be resolved as quickly as possible. Minister Sikorski said it directly during the Sejm Foreign Affairs Committee that his only solution to the situation just two months ago was the plan to have Rafał Trzaskowski elected President of the Republic of Poland. I think it’s high time for Minister Sikorski to implement Plan B, because his Plan A has not worked in any way,” he added.
