The construction of the first nuclear reactor in Konin is expected to commence around 2030, with an operational goal set for 2035-36. Tomasz Nowacki, the president of PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa, announced these plans during a meeting of the maritime economy and inland navigation committee. He emphasized that preparations for the nuclear power plant are already underway.
Legal Disputes and Negotiations
Despite potential legal disputes between Korean firm KHNP and American company Westinghouse regarding technology rights, Nowacki assured that these issues will not impact PGE PAK’s operations. Ongoing negotiations between the two parties are aimed at resolving their differences, which have echoes from previous international projects.
Nowacki expressed optimism for a resolution similar to past negotiations, referencing successful outcomes during the development of four Korean reactors in the UAE. He highlighted that American courts have dismissed Westinghouse’s claims, indicating a complex but manageable situation.
The company is currently working on a feasibility study for the project, pending the owners’ decision, following the acquisition of the principal decision from the climate minister in November 2023.
