The prosecutor’s office intends to question President Karol Nawrocki in connection with an investigation into the rental of apartments at the Museum of the Second World War. The proceedings were launched during the election campaign. “Retaliation,” commented the head of the National Security Bureau (BBN), Sławomir Cenckiewicz.
“The questioning of the President is planned, and therefore last week a letter was sent through official channels, via the Regional Prosecutor’s Office and the National Prosecutor’s Office, to the Chancellery of the President in order to determine the date of the questioning,” said the spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński.
The investigation concerns suspected abuse of power by public officials by allowing the free use of rooms and apartments belonging to the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. The proceedings were initiated in February last year and cover the period from October 18, 2017, to June 2024. The case concerns actions taken by the institution’s directors.
During the period covered by the investigation, the museum was headed by three directors: Dr. Karol Nawrocki, Dr. hab. Grzegorz Berendt, and Prof. Rafał Wnuk. Prosecutor Duszyński told PAP that the investigation has been extended until May 26 this year.
The proceedings were launched at the peak of the election campaign following media reports. Nawrocki has repeatedly responded to the accusations against him.
“I was pleased that the prosecutor’s office opened this investigation, because it will be an opportunity for the government television station to apologize to me for the captions it aired in its programs,” he said in February last year.
“There is no possibility that I lived in a hotel room for 200 days. I have a range of evidence for this: photos, bank transfers, invoices for trips with my wife on Valentine’s Day when I was staying outside that room, so the whole matter is completely unserious,” he stressed.
The prosecutor’s latest move was briefly commented on by the head of the National Security Bureau, Sławomir Cenckiewicz. “Retaliation.”
