Security Alarm at the Top: Intelligence Chief Flags Czarzasty’s Russian Links, But Key Questions Remain

A letter from the head of Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) regarding Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty and his questionable social and business relations with citizens of the Russian Federation has been submitted to the Chancellery of the President of Poland. Unfortunately, the document does not provide clarification—on the contrary, it raises further questions, Rafał Leśkiewicz wrote on X.

Several weeks ago, Gazeta Polska revealed unclear business and social ties between Włodzimierz Czarzasty and a Russian woman, Svetlana Czestnych, who is said to have connections to the Kremlin. At the same time, it emerged that the leader of the Left has for years avoided submitting a security questionnaire and undergoing vetting by the services in order to obtain security clearance. Despite the controversy and numerous arguments raised, Czarzasty has not decided to undergo the verification procedure of the Internal Security Agency.

The head of the ABW has now weighed in on the matter, sending a letter on the issue to the Chancellery of the President. However, the contents of the document remain unknown.

According to the President’s spokesperson, Colonel Rafał Syrysko’s letter “does not provide explanations—on the contrary, it raises further questions.”

“And yet there is a simple way to answer them: a vetting procedure conducted by the Internal Security Agency. The information provided in a comprehensive personal security questionnaire would constitute a formal and legal basis for its reliable verification by the services, instead of remaining in the realm of media reports. Only such verification guarantees the safeguarding of classified information and serves as a test of truthfulness. It also shows whether the person being vetted has nothing to hide,” Leśkiewicz wrote.

He recalled that President Karol Nawrocki has undergone such vetting procedures three times—in 2009, 2014, and 2021—“obtaining access to classified information, while the services never had any doubts as to the accuracy of the information provided in the questionnaires.”

“So why does the second-highest-ranking official in the state not take the same step? Are security standards different in the case of Marshal Czarzasty? A person holding such a high office must be like Caesar’s wife—above all suspicion. In a state governed by the rule of law, there can be no room for any doubts. Courage, Mr. Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty! Take up the pen!” he concluded, appealing to the leader of the Left.
