A former officer of Poland’s State Protection Service (SOP), suspected of the brutal murder of his four-year-old daughter and the attempted killing of four other family members, was completely sober at the time of the attack. According to the latest information released by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Słupsk, toxicology tests conducted on 44-year-old Piotr K. conclusively ruled out the presence of alcohol and drugs in his system. Investigators are preparing a motion to extend his pre-trial detention and are still awaiting a crucial psychiatric opinion that will determine his criminal responsibility.
Paweł Wnuk, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Słupsk, confirmed the findings related to the tragic events in Ustka. Expert analysis of samples taken from Piotr K., who held the rank of major, has now been added to the case file. The results effectively dispel earlier media speculation regarding the attacker’s condition at the time.
“It shows that at the time of committing the alleged acts, the suspect was not under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, intoxicants, or psychotropic substances,”
the prosecutor’s spokesperson said.
An assessment of the suspect’s mental state was also deemed necessary. Prosecutor Wnuk stated that Piotr K. underwent a one-time outpatient psychiatric examination conducted by two expert specialists.
“The psychiatric opinion has not yet been issued. The prosecutor’s office is awaiting it,”
Wnuk said.
The findings will determine whether the perpetrator was sane at the time and whether he will be held fully accountable before a court. Within the next few days, investigators are expected to file a motion to extend his temporary detention for another three months.
Nightmare on Bałtycka Street
The crime, which shocked all of Poland, took place on January 26. Piotr K., a service member with 23 years of experience, was on leave at the time. He was spending time with his wife and children at his in-laws’ apartment on Bałtycka Street in Ustka. According to witness accounts and media reports, the evening had initially been calm and family-oriented.
At around 9:30 p.m., after finishing a card game (reportedly the Polish game “tysiąc”), the 44-year-old suddenly attacked his relatives with a knife. The assault came without warning and, according to sources close to the investigation, was not preceded by any argument or visible agitation.
The consequences were tragic. Despite several dozen minutes of resuscitation, the man’s four-year-old daughter died from stab wounds to the chest. The attacker’s wife, the suspect himself, his in-laws, and his surviving son were all hospitalized with serious injuries.
A Career Destroyed and the Prospect of Life Imprisonment
Piotr K. has been charged by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Słupsk with the murder of his daughter and the attempted murder of four family members. He has confessed to the crimes and was placed in custody. However, at the initial stage of the proceedings, investigators did not disclose whether he provided a broader explanation regarding the motive behind his actions.
Following the incident, the suspect was immediately suspended from his official duties. Poland’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration had previously stated that the officer had passed routine medical examinations without issue in early October of the previous year. Although he served in Warsaw, it was repeatedly emphasized that he was not directly involved in the protection of the country’s top officials.
The procedure to remove him from service was swift. On February 10, Colonel Bogusław Piórkowski, spokesperson for the commander of the State Protection Service, announced that Piotr K. had been formally dismissed. For the crime he is accused of, he now faces the most severe possible penalty under Polish law — life imprisonment.
