Shots and Explosion in Munich. Oktoberfest Canceled. City Placed on Alert

German media reported shots and an explosion in Munich. The body of a man with gunshot wounds was found at the scene. One person is being sought. An alert was declared in the city, and the opening of the fair associated with the traditional Oktoberfest was postponed.

Since the early morning hours, a large-scale operation by police and fire services has been underway in Munich. From dawn, special units and bomb disposal experts have also been present in the northern part of the city. Witnesses claim they heard shots and an explosion.

The German daily Bild reports that there is one fatality. Services discovered the body of a man who allegedly planted explosive devices. He is said to have done so in his parents’ house, which, along with a car, was engulfed in flames. After detonating the substances, he moved several hundred meters away from the house and committed suicide. His body, bearing gunshot wounds, was found at the scene. Bomb disposal experts intervened because the man had a backpack with him, suspected of being another explosive trap.

A cloud of smoke was visible from a distance.

The area has been cordoned off, and services are directing traffic to safe detours. “Significant traffic disruptions may occur. Please avoid this area,” Munich police announced. They added that a nearby school will remain closed for the duration of the operation.

For security reasons, the opening of the traditional Oktoberfest beer fair has also been delayed.
