Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s Foreign Minister, responded in a mocking manner to the case of Polish citizens being beaten by German police officers in Berlin. “Please tell your daddy to be careful when ordering five beers in Germany, because promoting fascism, for obvious historical reasons, is strictly punished there”, Sikorski said in response to the daughter of Robert Bąkiewicz.
On Tuesday, members of the Border Defense Movement arrived in Berlin at the site of a boulder placed near the German parliament, which is intended to commemorate Polish victims of World War II. They wanted to place a symbolic cross there, but German police did not allow it. A brutal attack on the gathered Poles followed. Immediately after singing Rota, members of the Border Defense Movement moved with the cross toward the memorial site dedicated to victims of the Germans during World War II. At that moment, German police attacked the demonstrators. Officers began kicking and punching them. Some members of the movement were hospitalized.
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not show much engagement in the matter. A spokesperson for the ministry, Maciej Wewiór, told the media that in the case of the “intervention of the German police, the Polish consul in Berlin is acting.”
“He is currently determining the circumstances of the incident and the reasons for the detentions,” Wewiór said on Tuesday evening.
Today, Radosław Sikorski, head of Polish diplomacy, spoke out on the matter. He posted a message on X that can be interpreted as mocking the entire incident.
“With the holiday season beginning, I encourage you to follow the Polak Za Granicą website. One should respect local laws and comply with the instructions of law enforcement services. Polish consuls provide assistance, but they cannot always protect against the consequences of reckless behavior. I wish you a pleasant holiday and a safe return home!”
Blanka Bąkiewicz, the daughter of the Border Defense Movement leader who was beaten in Berlin, responded to the post.
“Mr. Sikorski, today you feel strong because you have power behind you. You can mock my father and lecture Poles. But power passes faster than you think. And the shame for such words remains,” she wrote.
Sikorski replied to her with the following words:
“Please tell your daddy to be careful when ordering five beers in Germany, because promoting fascism, for obvious historical reasons, is strictly punished there.”
In another post, Blanka Bąkiewicz pointed out that a Polish citizen has the right to receive protection from Polish state authorities while abroad.
“This case is exactly such a situation: Polish citizens were assaulted by German police, ended up in hospital, required medical assistance – and the Polish state has an obligation to respond! This is not a matter of your sympathy or your goodwill! It is your damn duty! Please stop lecturing Poles and start defending Polish citizens or resign due to incompetence,” added Robert Bąkiewicz’s daughter.
