Sikorski’s “Policy Speech” in Parliament. PiS MP Sounds the Alarm: Poland Has No Foreign Minister

Radosław Sikorski, the Foreign Minister, admitted that he opposes the principle of unanimity in defense matters. “They seriously want to hand over decisions about our national defense to majority voting,” warned Paweł Jabłoński, PiS MP and former Deputy Foreign Minister. “I’m appalled by Minister Sikorski’s speech,” added former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

During his parliamentary address, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski accused the opposition of “fearmongering” and misleading the public by claiming that the European Parliament’s resolution on EU defense, adopted on March 12, amounts to “handing control of the Polish army over to Brussels” or “tampering with our relationship with NATO.”

“Gentlemen, why are you scaring the public?” he asked. He emphasized that the resolution does not mention transferring command over the Polish military or its defense budget, and that its provisions aim to streamline and increase the efficiency of joint procurement of military equipment for member states’ armies.

“By buying together, we can buy cheaper,” he said.

According to the Foreign Minister, strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities does not weaken NATO but reinforces it. He noted that out of the 27 EU member states, 23 are also NATO members. “A stronger Europe is a more credible ally for the United States,” Sikorski stated.

Fogiel: Sikorski Repeats Misleading Claims

PiS politicians were quick to respond to Sikorski’s remarks.

“Minister Sikorski opened his speech in Parliament by complaining about the opposition and repeating manipulative claims about the EP resolution on defense,” MP Radosław Fogiel wrote.

He pointed out that Sikorski said “there’s nothing to worry about,” even though the resolution “proposes creating alternative structures to NATO and redirecting resources elsewhere—effectively weakening the Alliance.”

“They’re trying to abolish the unanimity rule in defense matters. Our security would be decided by coalitions of countries that built Nord Stream and believed Putin could be reasoned with,” Fogiel added.

Kaleta: “Tusk’s Team Are Berlin’s Butlers”

Former Deputy Justice Minister Sebastian Kaleta echoed the criticism, saying:

“Radosław Sikorski just supported eliminating the EU veto right, even on defense issues. Tusk’s team are Berlin’s butlers. They are leading the charge in surrendering our right to self-determination.”

Jabłoński: “This Is Dangerous”

Former Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński also highlighted Sikorski’s comments.

“He admitted he’s against unanimity in defense. They really do want to hand over decisions on our national defense to majority voting! EU arithmetic is clear: NO decision will be made without Germany’s approval,” Jabłoński warned.

Morawiecki: “They Want to Surrender Our Security”

Responding to Jabłoński’s statement, former Prime Minister and ECR Chairman Mateusz Morawiecki said he was “appalled by Minister Sikorski’s speech.”

“They want to hand over our security to European bureaucrats! We will never allow Poland’s safety to be decided by countries that spent years doing business with Russia and disarming their own militaries! Stop paying off your political debts at the expense of Poland’s security! The Foreign Minister also lacked the courage to apologize for the absence of an EU-US summit in Warsaw,” Morawiecki posted on social media.

“Zero Substance”

Jabłoński also pointed out what was missing from Sikorski’s speech:

“ZERO substance on the Three Seas Initiative, ZERO on the Bucharest Nine, almost nothing on the Visegrád Group – and most of all, NO vision at all for what role Poland should play as the largest country in Central Europe. (…) Because of this disastrous government, Poland is missing a historic opportunity to truly matter in Europe. In reality – not just in its own propaganda,” the former diplomat wrote.
