Sławomir Mentzen’s views. Debate on the Confederation co-leader: “A pig in a poke”

“Sławomir Mentzen is like a pig in a poke. If you vote for him, you have no idea what color that cat will be when it finally jumps out,” former deputy prime minister Jacek Sasin said on TV Republika.

One of the leaders of Confederation, Sławomir Mentzen, sharply criticized the social policy ideas presented at the Law and Justice (PiS) convention. “Annual indexation of the 800+ child benefit, housing vouchers of 100,000 PLN for the third child, a basic income of 500 PLN for everyone, scrapping the tax-free amount, a four-day workweek for seniors, a guaranteed down payment for mortgages, and many other similar ideas are all part of the socialist program PiS showed today,” he commented. “Is anyone still surprised that I don’t want to have anything to do with this?” he asked.

Przemysław Czarnek responded to Mentzen’s post: “I appeal to Sławek Mentzen, whom I personally like very much: take it easy. There are lots of wonderful patriotic people in Confederation, and you can always come to an understanding with them — you just have to change the way you conduct these relations. This is an appeal to Sławek Mentzen to ease up a bit.”

Mentzen’s attitude and the profile of his political activity were discussed on the program “Polityczna Kawa” (“Political Coffee”) by guests of editor Tomasz Sakiewicz.

“Sławomir Mentzen’s views are whatever suits him at a given moment, depending on the audience,” noted Sławomir Ćwik from Poland 2050.

“When he posts something on X, which is aimed mainly at young people, he writes about how anti-socialist he is. But when he’s talking to retirees, then he doesn’t remind them that he wants to take away the 13th and 14th pension; instead he says that in fact pensioners will have even more money. In one place he says one thing, in another he says something else — to push his message as widely as possible. But that message is not true. He only thinks about his own narrow political interest,” Ćwik said on Telewizja Republika.

Former deputy prime minister Jacek Sasin agreed that “Sławomir Mentzen is like a pig in a poke.”

“If you vote for him, you don’t know what color that cat will be when it jumps out in the end. You don’t know what his views are — he really tailors them to the audience — and you don’t know with whom he wants to carry out his program. After all, we keep hearing that the doors are open in every direction,” the PiS politician observed.

“How can you talk about ‘changing Poland,’ as he does, and imagine doing that together with Donald Tusk?” he asked in closing.
