The President appoints a special council. Work on a new constitution to begin

“The President will establish a Council for a New Constitution at the Royal Castle on Constitution Day, May 3,” announced the spokesperson for the President of the Republic of Poland, Rafał Leśkiewicz. He added, “the President is inviting representatives of parliamentary clubs and groups, because this is, after all, a decision of a political nature, regardless of how we might view it.”

On Sunday – May 3 – in Warsaw, the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, together with his wife Marta Nawrocka, will take part in celebrations marking the National May 3 Constitution Day. The Presidential Chancellery’s website stated that the Presidential Couple will participate, among other things, in a Mass at St. John’s Archcathedral and in ceremonies at the Royal Castle, including the presentation of the Order of the White Eagle.

The President’s spokesperson also announced this morning on Polsat News the establishment of another council under the President – precisely on May 3.

“Later, there will also be an extremely important and symbolic ceremony, as the President will establish at the Royal Castle a Council for a New Constitution, that is, on Constitution Day, May 3. […] On May 3 Constitution Day, we are beginning the process of creating the Council for a New Constitution. On that day, the first members of this council will be appointed,” Rafał Leśkiewicz said.

During the interview, the President’s spokesperson stated that “invitations were sent yesterday to representatives of parliamentary clubs and groups. We propose that each club appoint two representatives, and each group one representative. A team of experts will also join.”

He recalled that after being sworn in as head of state, President Karol Nawrocki pledged in his address before the National Assembly to prepare a draft of a new constitution, which he identified as one of the main goals of his presidency.

“Thus, these will not be meetings over coffee and cookies, but concrete, substantive work. That is why the President is inviting representatives of parliamentary clubs and groups, because this is, after all, a decision of a political nature, regardless of how we might view it. The constitution is, of course, the most important act, the fundamental law, but it must be developed within a certain political consensus,” he announced.

Leśkiewicz stated that the Council will consist of three components: political, expert, and social. As he added, the essence of the rule of law and a transparent process of drafting the fundamental law is that different views and opinions should clash.

“Of course, at the beginning there will be brainstorming, developing a joint project, which will then be formally processed in accordance with the rules by the Polish parliament,” he clarified.

Council for the Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad

The President’s spokesperson also announced in the same program that tomorrow (May 2), at the Presidential Palace, Karol Nawrocki will appoint a new advisory body – the Council for the Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad.
