“Minister Żurek has revealed himself to be a kind of legal terrorist. Yes, in Poland, we do not have a legally functioning National Prosecutor. Minister Żurek issued regulations that conflicted with the Constitution of the Republic of Poland,” assessed President Karol Nawrocki.
In January, the Sejm adopted an amendment to the Act on the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) along with a related amendment to the Electoral Code. Under the main provisions of the proposed changes, 15 judge-members of the KRS are to be elected by all judges in direct and secret elections organized by the National Electoral Commission, rather than, as is currently the case, by the Sejm.
“Legal terrorist”
During an interview with Polsat News, the President of the Republic of Poland was asked about his decision on the matter. He spoke in strong terms about the head of the Ministry of Justice.
“Minister Żurek has revealed himself to be a kind of legal terrorist. Yes, in Poland, we do not have a legally functioning National Prosecutor. Minister Żurek issued regulations that conflicted with the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. This, in fact, required a response from the Chancellery of the President; Minister Bogucki reported the matter to the prosecutor’s office and to the Constitutional Tribunal.”
He also admitted that the minister from Tusk’s government did not act as though he sought genuine dialogue with the President.
“From the very beginning, Minister Żurek sought confrontation. By behaving in this way and by not listening to the voice of the President of Poland, Żurek has not shown himself to be a person who wants dialogue,”
he said.
