The MFA in Madrid summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires Anton Cherepov to express its protest over the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones.
Acting as the head of the mission in Madrid in the absence of the ambassador, Cherepov was called to the ministry on Thursday morning.
In an interview given a few days ago to the portal 20minutos, the head of the Russian mission in Madrid assessed that “the militarization of Europe carries the risk of direct confrontation between the EU and Russia.”
On Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed solidarity with Poland, stating that “the violation of European airspace by Russia is unacceptable.”
“Poland can always count on us,” added the head of the Spanish government.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares spoke on Wednesday with his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski, to whom he conveyed “Spain’s expression of solidarity in connection with Russia’s flagrant violation of Polish airspace.” The politician emphasized Europe’s unity in the face of the Russian threat.
During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces reported that during Russia’s overnight attack on Ukraine, Polish airspace was repeatedly violated by drones. In order to ensure the security of Polish airspace, the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces activated all necessary procedures. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that drones which could pose a threat were shot down.
