“Their Last Stand.” Tomasz Sakiewicz: Everything Looks Like the Second Stage of a Coup

The raid on the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS), six months in prison for Adam Borowski, forcing a prosecutor to reopen a previously discontinued investigation against Tomasz Duklanowski, and launching a media witch-hunt against Republika — all of this looks like the second stage of a coup, writes Tomasz Sakiewicz, editor-in-chief and president of TV Republika.

I believe the reasons are somewhat different — these are spasms preceding the loss of power. Waldemar Żurek is cleaning out files relating to himself and his associates, while some of the government’s foot soldiers are still trying to halt the government’s growing unpopularity by striking at the largest conservative television station. It will achieve nothing.

I believe that Republika, with your support, will defend itself. But the disintegration of the ruling camp can no longer be prevented. It was glued together abroad, and there is now considerable turmoil there. During my brief visit to the United States, I realized that Donald Tusk’s team is being assessed there in a manner it deserves. Governing elites are observing this clique and looking solely at the degree of their political entanglements.

In other words, those least compromised are being given a chance to evacuate. As for Germany, it appears they have a rebellion on board — that is, within the European Union — and this will heavily engage them. Several nervous months lie ahead, and this year, every scenario is possible.
