A deepening crisis is gripping the Polska 2050 Party. After Szymon Hołownia announced that he would not run for the position of party leader, some MPs began seeking political refuge in the Polish People’s Party (PSL) and Civic Platform (PO). According to RMF FM, at least six parliamentarians have already applied to join the Polish People’s Party.
Where will they end up?
At least six members of the Polska 2050 Party have submitted applications to join the Polish People’s Party, while others are exploring the possibility of switching to Civic Platform, RMF FM has learned.
From the Sejm to the UN?
Szymon Hołownia, Marshal of the Sejm and leader of the Polska 2050 Party, announced that “he would not be running for the position of chairman of the Polska 2050 Party.” He also applied in an open recruitment process announced by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
On Tuesday evening, the National Council of the Polska 2050 Party nominated Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz as a candidate for Deputy Prime Minister in Donald Tusk’s government, responsible for the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy. Earlier statements revealed that Hołownia had been offered a position in the government as Deputy Prime Minister but declined.
Last week, Ryszard Petru announced his intention to run for chairman of the Polska 2050 Party. He presented five key proposals that, in his view, should convince party members to support his candidacy and form the main message of the party for the next two years. Petru declared that he wants to regain the 2023 Polska 2050 Party voters and return to the ideas that contributed to the success of Third Way.
According to RMF FM, the ongoing crisis in Hołownia’s party and the uncertain outlook for its future are prompting MPs to change their political allegiance. The station reports that six party members have already submitted formal applications to the Polish People’s Party, while others are considering moving to Civic Platform.
“In conversations with the RMF FM reporter, the MPs explained their decision as a result of disappointment with Szymon Hołownia’s choice to abandon his own party, and secondly, a lack of faith in the party’s future,” the report reads.
