Some supporters of the current government gathered in front of the Presidential Palace to demand the EU SAFE loan. During the demonstration they chanted “away with Kaczor, the dictator”. Commentators mocked the scene, noting “two years in opposition and they still believe he’s the one in power”.
On Sunday, a rally was held in front of the Presidential Palace under the slogan “We Want to Be SAFE”. Supporters of the current ruling coalition expressed their backing for the EU SAFE loan, which was opposed by President Karol Nawrocki.
But that was not all. At one point politics took over so strongly that protest participants began chanting – attention! – “away with Kaczor, the dictator”. It appeared to be a government-backed demonstration directed against the opposition.
“Kaczor is a genius. Two years in opposition and they still believe he’s the one in power,” commentators wrote ironically.
President Karol Nawrocki announced on Thursday that he was vetoing the government bill implementing the EU SAFE loan, which would put Poles in debt for many years. Instead, together with the president of the National Bank of Poland, he proposed a Polish mechanism called SEJF 0 percent. However, the current government continues to push for the EU loan and has announced plans to bypass the presidential veto.
