Today is The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is a feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the aspect of her motherhood of Jesus Christ celebrated on January 1. Aaccording to Levitical Law, the Virgin Mary had circumcised on the eighth day after Jesus birth.

It is celebrated by the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church on 1 January, the Octave (8th) day of Christmas. This solemnity is a Holy Day of Obligation in areas that have not abrogated it. Christians of Byzantine, West Syriac, and East Syriac Rites celebrate Mary as the Mother of God on 26 December (also known as the Synaxis of the Theotokos), while the Coptic Church (an Oriental Orthodox church) does so on 16 January.
The Eastern Orthodox Church, Traditional Catholics, Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church observe the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ on 1 January.

“While there is no celebration of the New Year in the liturgical year, the Liturgy of the Word seems to be full of references just in time to begin it.
First, the blessing (FIRST READING, PSALM), which makes us remember that God always cares for man and that his Word is far more effective than the human word: it does what it says.
And secondly, time. Saint Paul reminds us that in addition to the time that counts the calendar, there is another time, kairos (SECOND READING). It allows you to look at life from a different, God’s perspective, which perfectly verifies resolutions and intentions: which of them are important and which are unnecessary.
And thirdly, listening. As a mother, Mary not only bravely undertook all the duties related to caring for her Son. Luke notes an important detail: she pondered and kept (Gospel). She listened to the Word of God and observed the events happening around her.”
