Trump Announces New Tariffs: 25% on Foreign Metals

President Donald Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on foreign steel and aluminum, reviving his protectionist trade approach. The announcement was made aboard Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl.

President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on foreign steel and aluminum, set to take effect on Monday. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump also revealed plans for additional tariffs on products from various countries, aiming to match the levels imposed on American goods abroad. Similar tariffs were introduced during his first term, though exemptions were later granted to Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, with further relief extended to the EU, Japan, and the UK under Former President Joe Biden.

“American Gulf Day” and Trade Policies

Trump made the announcement en route to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, using the occasion to declare February 9 as “American Gulf Day”—renaming the Gulf of Mexico in a symbolic gesture. While addressing reporters, he also mentioned ongoing discussions with Russia regarding Ukraine. The new tariffs signal a potential shift toward protectionist trade policies, reminiscent of his earlier presidency.
