“We won’t adopt the euro. Right now, the złoty guarantees our resilience in times of crisis,” Rafał Trzaskowski assured during a conversation with Sławomir Mentzen. But can this really be believed? That’s questionable.
During the discussion, the Confederation politician raised one of the most sensitive topics for the December 13 coalition—especially during the election campaign: the adoption of the euro.
He asked whether Trzaskowski would change his mind if Poland met the necessary budgetary criteria to join the eurozone.
Without hesitation, Trzaskowski declared that “no one is currently planning this.”
Soon after, attempts were made to present the issue in a more nuanced light. The deputy leader of Civic Platform stated that the złoty provides stability and independence in times of crisis, while the euro might be seen by other EU countries as a symbol of security.
Trzaskowski Caught in a Lie
At that moment, Sławomir Mentzen reminded everyone that it was none other than Trzaskowski himself who, in October 2024, said: “If we want to be safe, one of the strongest arguments is adopting the euro.”
Clearly, the PO vice-chair didn’t see that coming. He quickly began explaining that in the context of allied guarantees, the euro could indeed enhance Poland’s security.
He reiterated, however, that “no one wants to introduce the euro today.” Mentzen fired back, saying he hopes that remains true tomorrow as well.
