What do Rafał Trzaskowski’s voters expect from him the most? Exactly what he promised himself: to sign a civil unions bill – including for same-sex couples.
Civil Unions in Poland
“Should the future president sign a bill passed by the Sejm introducing civil unions, including for same-sex couples?” – this was the question posed in a recent Opinia24 poll commissioned by Radio ZET.
According to the results, 44% of respondents support such a move (24% strongly, 21% somewhat), while 45% oppose it (15% somewhat, 30% strongly). Another 11% remain undecided.
The data reveals that women are more supportive of the bill than men: 49% of women are in favor (26% strongly, 23% somewhat), compared to 39% of men (21% strongly, 18% somewhat). Opposition is more prevalent among men – 51% are against the bill, versus 39% of women.
Age also plays a significant role – the younger the respondents, the stronger the support. Among those aged 18–24, 58% back the proposal, including 40% who are strongly in favor. Opposition in this age group stands at 32%. Support declines progressively with age.
Will Trzaskowski Deliver?
Political affiliation also significantly influences opinions on civil unions. An overwhelming 81% of Trzaskowski’s supporters want him to sign the bill, with only 11% opposed.
Among supporters of Szymon Hołownia, 67% favor the legislation, while 30% are against. In contrast, opposition dominates among backers of Karol Nawrocki (82% opposed, 12% in favor) and Sławomir Mentzen (68% opposed, 22% in favor).
The Opinia24 survey was conducted for Radio ZET between April 2–6 on a nationally representative sample of 1,002 adult Poles.
He Said It Himself
During a recent presidential debate, Trzaskowski openly called the lack of a civil unions law “absurd.” He highlighted issues such as hospital visitation and inheritance, which are often complicated without formal legal recognition of a partnership.
“This is utter madness,” he said. “Two people – usually heterosexual couples – spend their lives together and can’t even visit each other in the hospital or inherit from one another. A vast majority of Polish society wants these solutions.”
The Bottom Line
If Trzaskowski – often dubbed “Vice-Tusk” – were to become president, ideological reforms like this could very well become a reality.
