“I expect greater activity from President Nawrocki. If he is able to get something done, he shouldn’t hold back, and I will truly, with full conviction, support his actions if he decides on any”, said Donald Tusk after his major diplomatic defeat. Poland, whose prime minister is Tusk, was not invited to the key talks on peace in Ukraine.
Yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland, representatives of the informal E3 group of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union (UE), the United States, and Ukraine, met. The talks also concerned the 28-point peace plan for Ukraine proposed by the United States. Not a single representative of the Polish government took part in the consultations.
After the talks, they were described as “extremely fruitful”. Moreover, they are expected to result in an updated peace agreement meant to end the war with Russia. Today, a continuation of those consultations is scheduled. And again – without any Polish representative.
What is more, the day before – on the sidelines of the G20 Group summit in Johannesburg – the leaders of the European Union (UE), Canada, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan met to discuss Ukraine. In their joint statement, the leaders underlined that the U.S. draft plan for Ukraine is a basis requiring further work.
Now – in Luanda, the capital celebrating the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence – the 7th European Union-African Union (UA) Summit is beginning. And it is only this event that the head of the Polish government, Donald Tusk, is attending. However, the very fact of his visit did not attract as much attention as the completely inappropriate styling of the prime minister:
Tusk to President Nawrocki: “Don’t Hold Back“
A public question thus arises: why is Poland, although it was the first to extend a helping hand to war-stricken Ukraine, not taking part in the talks concerning peace in that country?
The reason seems obvious – the administration of Donald Trump, and it is the United States that is the initiator of the peace plan, does not see partners in Donald Tusk’s government. Not without reason. After all, the head of the Polish government has not once apologized to the American president for, among other things, calling him “a Russian agent”.
Nevertheless, Tusk decided – straight from Angola – to speak on the peace negotiations. And right from the start, he once again expressed a submissive attitude towards Germany.
“Chancellor Merz has already informed me about the details of his conversation with President Trump and about his assessment of the situation, including Russia’s economic situation and the negotiations that took place in Geneva” – he said. In short, Tusk recounted his conversation with the German chancellor about… Merz’s conversation with Trump. It sounds at least bizarre, but also dramatic.
He then added that “[Merz – editor’s note] also assured me that Germany, and the same was said by Ms. Giorgia Meloni, with whom I had the opportunity to speak, as well as the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council – all of them take the position that Poland should participate in all formats concerning talks about future peace, about ending the war, so I can say that I have full support here”.
But not to worry. Nothing will change because… as Tusk admitted – “I will make sure not to push myself into places where there are potential problems for Poland, and also so that you are clear, I will not authorize or place on Poland and our shoulders any guarantees that we do not want to give”.
Interestingly, he did not miss the opportunity to strike at President Karol Nawrocki.
“Many weeks ago President Nawrocki told me in a conversation that he was ready to take this on, because he has excellent relations with President Trump – at least that’s what he believes – and that he is ready to take care of this part of our international relations, claiming that he definitely has better relations than I do”, he said.
He continued, saying: “I do not rule it out, I am not, as you know, an enthusiast of all the words or actions or decisions of President Trump – I have never hidden this – so I expect greater activity from President Nawrocki. If he is able to get something done, he shouldn’t hold back, and I will truly, with full conviction, support his actions if he decides on any”.
