Tusk Sparks Controversy: Decision to Protect TVN Called “Censorship” and a “Muzzle on Free Speech”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s announcement to classify TVN and Polsat as strategic companies under state protection has ignited a heated debate online. The move, unveiled during a press conference, aims to shield the broadcasters from potentially “dangerous acquisitions” that could allegedly harm Poland’s national interests.

“I have decided to amend the regulation on the list of entities subject to protection, adding TVN and Polsat to the list of strategic companies,” Tusk said. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding these outlets from foreign takeovers.

The announcement comes amidst reports that Warner Bros. Discovery, the current owner of TVN, might consider selling the station due to financial difficulties. Recent speculation suggests potential buyers include the Czech conglomerate PPF and Hungarian holding company József Vida.

However, the decision has drawn sharp criticism, with many social media users accusing the government of imposing censorship and undermining free speech. Some have referred to the move as placing a “muzzle on freedom of expression.”

Prominent journalist Tomasz Sakiewicz also weighed in, accusing Tusk of protecting a media outlet that played a role in his political ascent. “TVN under special protection,” Sakiewicz commented. “Tusk is trying to safeguard the tool that helped him gain power.”
