“Now we have complete clarity. My successor, the current prime minister, was brutally outplayed in the EU,” said Mateusz Morawiecki during a press conference. “This is the worst EU budget from Poland’s perspective,” he added.
A Polish official was involved in drafting the EU budget – Piotr Serafin, who, in his previous role as ambassador to the EU, was seen in recordings “running after KPO funds for Poland,” is now the European Commissioner for Budget and represents Poland in the European Commission.
The proposal for the financial framework was presented on Wednesday, July 16. “We now have full clarity – my successor was brutally outmaneuvered in the EU. His commissioner for budget is signing off on a budget that is the worst we’ve seen since Poland began receiving funds from the EU. From Poland’s point of view, this is the worst possible budget,” Morawiecki said.
The former prime minister explained that the current proposal would drain Poland’s national budget.
“We firmly say NO to the EU’s own resources being taken directly from our budget. Today, with the approval of Tusk and Serafin, the EU is proposing solutions that would siphon money from the Polish budget. They want to draw directly from our funds,” Morawiecki emphasized.
“The Worst-Case Scenario”
Waldemar Buda stressed that “we’re seeing a sequence of events in which Donald Tusk keeps getting outplayed.”
“We’re witnessing a budget being presented by a Pole that is unfavorable for Poland. Any decent person would refuse to sign off on this budget. This person should have their nomination to this role withdrawn. With this budget, the European Commission wants to resolve a key issue – whether it can impose taxes in Poland. That’s what this is about, and we do not agree to that,” the MEP explained.
Piotr Müller pointed out that although members of the ruling coalition claim this is a record-breaking budget for Poland, farmers and municipalities will soon feel the effects of reduced funding. “This will become clear very quickly,” he noted.
“Disastrous for Polish Interests”
“From the perspective of Polish interests, this is a disastrous proposal. One of the unquestionable benefits of EU membership has always been our status as a beneficiary of the Cohesion Fund and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). In the financial framework presented by Piotr Serafin, these benefits will be reduced, as a cut in funding has been proposed,” said Mariusz Błaszczak during a morning press conference.
