TV Republika reveals new tapes. What did Lis discuss with Giertych before the 2019 election?

TV Republika has released another set of recordings—this time a 2019 conversation between Tomasz Lis and Roman Giertych. In it, the attorney asks Lis to publish on his news portal a letter written by his father ahead of the parliamentary vote.

A letter from Giertych’s father before the election – the new tapes

In 2019, shortly before the parliamentary elections, natemat.pl—a site owned by Tomasz Lis—published an open letter from Maciej Giertych, Roman Giertych’s father:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, The most important election in years is approaching. Driven by a sense of duty, I would like to warn all my compatriots against casting their ballot for PiS in this vote. I am writing to lay Catholics in our country, because the guidance they unfortunately receive in this matter from the hierarchy, clergy, and Catholic media is wrong and, with astounding arrogance, intrudes upon the freedom of the laity.”

Today, TV Republika disclosed the background of how that letter was published, presenting the following dialogue between Tomasz Lis (T.L.) and Roman Giertych (R.G.):

R.G.: Tomek, listen, I’m not sure whether you read my dad’s letter from the day before yesterday.

T.L.: You know, I did notice it—I kind of glanced through it, so to speak.

R.G.: Yesterday, Idziemy weekly officially withdrew its support for PiS. It’s a Warsaw-Praga Catholic weekly. Their editor-in-chief’s leading article attacks PiS—accusing Jarek of hypocrisy over his speech on defending the Christian family, criticising the 500+ program…

T.L.: Interesting.

R.G.: Look, we can’t rope in Rydzyk—he’s locked in—but if this gets enough coverage, Catholic weeklies and other media may start pulling their endorsements. That would translate into higher support for PSL.

T.L.: Which, according to the latest polls, is apparently already below the electoral threshold—you know that?

R.G.: I know, I know. Poll numbers are always tough for PSL. But a two-percent swing from PiS to PSL could mean a change of government.

T.L.: Interesting—I’ll pass it along later.
