On the night from Thursday to Friday, two unidentified drones were observed over the Karlskrona archipelago in southeastern Sweden. The main base of the Swedish Navy is located nearby.
Mattias Lundgren of the local police confirmed to public broadcaster SVT that the incident involved “a larger type of drone, similar to those observed in recent days in Denmark.” According to witnesses, the unmanned aircraft were flashing red and green lights.
Lundgren stated that an investigation has been launched into a violation of aviation law.
Karlskrona, a city situated on islands, hosts the main base of the Swedish Navy. It is also home to defense industry companies connected with submarines and maritime technologies. Karlskrona is an important port on the Baltic Sea, with ferries arriving there from, among other places, Gdynia.
More Drones Over Scandinavia
In recent days, there have been multiple violations of airspace by unidentified large drones in Denmark.
According to Danish police, drones were spotted overnight from Wednesday to Thursday over the airports in Aalborg (in the north), Esbjerg (in the west), and Sønderborg, as well as over the Skrydstrup military air base (in the south). On Monday evening, unidentified drones were seen over airports in Copenhagen and Oslo in neighboring Norway, blocking air traffic there for several hours.
On the night from Thursday to Friday, Aalborg Airport was once again briefly closed due to a suspected drone flight.
Norwegian authorities reported on Thursday that they had arrested a foreign national operating a drone near Oslo International Airport.
