German police have reported “repelling a drone attack” involving an unmanned aerial vehicle flying on the Polish side of the border. An official document on the matter was published by journalist Aleksandra Fedorska.
On Monday, border controls with Germany were reinstated. This came after many days of public outcry over reports of migrants being transported into Poland by German authorities. The situation at the border was being monitored by civilian patrols, led by the Border Defense Movement (Ruch Obrony Granic), who also utilized drones in their operations.
German Police “Repelled a Drone Attack”
Journalist Aleksandra Fedorska reported that last Saturday, German police intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle approaching from Poland. She posted a response from the Federal Police to an email inquiry, which stated:
“On July 5, 2025, around 6:30 p.m., rescue services in the border area near Blankensee spotted an unmanned aerial system (UAS) approaching forces deployed in the border zone from the Polish side of the border line. The police technical unit repelled the drone attack by interrupting its signal reception frequency using the technical capabilities available to the police.”
Authorities added that the drone returned to its point of origin.
“The unmanned aerial vehicle was not forced to land, but it was prevented from continuing its flight over German territory or near the rescue forces,” they explained.
The police justified their actions with aviation regulations and emphasized that:
“Approaching unknown unmanned aerial vehicles presents concrete security threats to the deployed forces and to the personal rights of the unit as a whole.”
“In principle, it cannot be ruled out that the intercepted unmanned aerial system failed to meet the necessary requirements and procedures for approved cross-border flights. The police may take all necessary actions to prevent such threats within the framework of risk prevention,” they added.
German authorities emphasized that they will act similarly in the future and warned that the drone operator may face consequences:
“The police are also exploring the possibility of initiating criminal or administrative proceedings against the operator of the unmanned aerial vehicle responsible for using such drones and thus violating the LuftVO regulations,” they stated.
The Recording
It’s worth noting that the morning after the Polish drone was intercepted, PiS MP Dariusz Matecki posted a video online showing the situation at the border. In the footage, German police officers are seen pointing a device toward the sky resembling one used to jam drone systems. The politician expressed outrage.
“The Germans are massively using thermal imaging drones along the border, which is how they know where people patrolling the border are and where they can push migrants through,” he emphasized.
He also reminded viewers about the statement from the Polish police introducing drone flight restrictions near the Polish-German border.
“So a Pole can’t do it, but German services can,” he stated.
It is worth highlighting that the restriction notice came a day after the Border Defense Movement announced the purchase of a thermal imaging drone intended to monitor the situation at the border.
