“May 5 is not just another date in the calendar. It is a day that reminds us that people with disabilities still face barriers that should have long since ceased to exist,” said First Lady Marta Nawrocka in a recording published on the occasion of today’s European Day for Combating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities and the Day of Dignity of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.
May 5 marks the European Day for Combating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities as well as the Day of Dignity of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. On this occasion, a special video featuring the presidential couple was published on the profile of the Chancellery of the President.
“May 5 is not just another date in the calendar. It is a day that reminds us that people with disabilities still face barriers that should have long since ceased to exist,” said First Lady Marta Nawrocka.
President Karol Nawrocki emphasized that it is “also a day of commitment to actually remove these barriers.”
“Today we are talking about real people – citizens of our state who want to live independently, work, learn, build relationships and take responsibility for their lives. And they have every right to do so. That is why it is so important for the state to be on their side. Not in declarations, but in everyday solutions,” he stated.
The First Lady added that “people with disabilities do not need special treatment – they need equal rules, predictable solutions, appropriate support, and the ability to decide about their own lives.”
“That is why issues such as personal assistance and changing the rules for combining work with disability benefits require concrete decisions. This is a direction that strengthens dignity and real participation in social life,” she said.
“May 5 reminds us of responsibility. A shared responsibility to ensure that the Polish state is truly accessible to all its citizens. Because a community is strong when no one is left on its margins,” the president pointed out.
“Thank you for your perseverance and your efforts. We promise to support you,” the First Lady concluded.
