Why do we need counterintelligence? Poland 2050 MP: “We’re always one step behind” and “first comes the attack, then the reaction”

“We must be aware that we are always one step behind, because we are unable to predict the actions of foreign intelligence services,” said Żaneta Cwalina-Śliwowska (Polska 2050) on TV Republika during a discussion about the work of Polish services in preventing acts of sabotage. “This is exactly what the security policy of the smiling coalition ruling Poland looks like,” commented Michał Jelonek from Republika.

On Miłosz Kłeczek’s program, politicians summarized the recent sabotage on Polish railway lines, carried out last weekend by Russian services. Beata Kempa, adviser to President Karol Nawrocki, complained that such “destabilization of the state appeared once Donald Tusk became prime minister.” She also judged the government’s communication regarding the sabotage very poorly. “The government has completely lost its way when it comes to the facts,” she said.

Unexpectedly, confirmation of some of these points came during the same program. Żaneta Cwalina-Śliwowska (MP from Poland 2050) either expressed herself very badly—or offered an even worse assessment of the level of Poland’s counterintelligence services.

“We must be aware that we are always one step behind. Because we do not know—we are unable to predict—what foreign services will do to us,” Cwalina-Śliwowska stated.

“We must predict—that’s what counterintelligence is for,” host Kłeczek tried to explain.

“Anyone who is attacked: first comes the attack, then comes the reaction,” replied the Poland 2050 MP.

The recording was later commented on by another Republika journalist, Michał Jelonek. “This is exactly the picture of the smiling coalition ruling Poland when it comes to security and counteracting acts of sabotage,” he wrote. “If the SKW counterintelligence is run by cap-wearing ‘Aurora’ fans like Dusza, then how are they supposed to catch Russian saboteurs, when for years they’ve been chauffeuring those Russians around Poland themselves?” he added.
