Panic seems to be creeping into the ruling camp. Politicians from the December 13 governing coalition have started offering explanations regarding the allocation of National Recovery Plan (KPO) funds. The fear of public backlash over the financing of questionable projects is clearly showing in the eyes of those in power.
Following a series of reports exposing how KPO money has been spent, the Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, spoke out. Let us recall that instead of supporting the development of Polish companies, some businesses planned to use the grants from KPO for yachts, saunas, furniture, or coffee machines.
Pełczyńska-Nałęcz commented on the matter but barely addressed the actual claims. Rather than explaining why projects like yachts and saunas are being funded by KPO, she launched a thoughtless attack on Law and Justice (PiS), blaming the previous government for the lack of KPO funds during their tenure.
“You can choose to do nothing. That was the path PiS chose, blocking KPO for two years. Or you can take the bull by the horns and carry out the biggest development project for Poland in just two years. And that’s what we did,” she wrote on platform X.
Pełczyńska-Nałęcz also wrote: “Everything will be checked so thoroughly that not even a mouse will slip through.”
But can her explanations really be considered credible? After all, it was Civic Platform politicians who, for years, stirred up trouble in Brussels and persuaded their colleagues from the European People’s Party to withhold KPO funds from Poland. Has Pełczyńska-Nałęcz forgotten that?
