Jan Zielinski and Hugo Nys were no match for the Australian pair of Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler in the doubles final of the Australian Open, eventually losing 4:6, 6:7 after a fierce struggle.
Jan Zielinski, alongside Hugo Nys, had the opportunity to make history with a Grand Slam win. During his doubles career, the Pole has won two tournaments with Nys and Hubert Hurkacz. On their path to the Australian Open final, the Polish-Monegasque team won five matches, four of which went to a third set.
Australians take the first set
Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler got off to a strong start in their opening set. They managed to break their opponents in the third game and didn’t give them a chance to take any points.
Hijikata and Kubler did not let themselves take any game in the first set. They won 6:4 and came out on top in the match after only 31 minutes of play.
Fierce game
The second set for both teams was very even. It was hard for either side to gain an advantage with their serves, yet neither was able to make a decisive move.
The match between the two teams came down to a tie-break which ultimately determined the winners. The game was very close, but it was the Australian duo of Hijikata and Kubler who made the decisive moves, winning the tie-break 7:4 and the entire match 6:4, 7:6, thus taking the title at the Australian Open doubles tournament.
