On Saturday, the European Debate was held online with the participation of the editor-in-chief of ‘Gazeta Polska’ and ‘Gazeta Polska Codziennie’. The keyword in the debate was ‘solidarity’. Tomasz Sakiewicz stressed that solidarity between Poland and Hungary had been worked out in Europe.
‘Why can lack of economic solidarity be the destruction of the European community? What are the other consequences of such a lack of solidarity?’ – editor-in-chief Tomasz Sakiewicz was asked during the debate.
‘I have a problem because I don’t believe in those so-called high values, such as solidarity at the European level. I am convinced that it does not work at all, that it is an empty phrase,’ pointed out the editor-in-chief of ‘Gazeta Polska’ and ‘Gazeta Polska Codziennie’, emphasizing:
‘I see several reasons for this: because group solidarity is a very ambitious thing, a very high value, and something like that must be based on a very strong system. Perhaps there was such a system in the ideas of the fathers of Europe, but today there is no such system on which values such as solidarity can be based. What the fathers of Europe built has been destroyed. Today’s system is not built on any value. We are dealing with neo-Marxist philosophy. Nobody is saying what this system should look like, what the meaning of these particular values that are being talked about, that are being presented. It all sounds beautiful: solidarity, justice, but that does not mean real solidarity, real justice. We need a system on which we can base these values’.
As Editor-in-Chief Sakiewicz pointed out, solidarity is extremely important.
‘Solidarity is a very important value, it is based on Christian philosophy, and it is particularly important in our European context. The representatives of the European Union are not proposing any European foundations. But this does not mean that solidarity is impossible, there can be solidarity based on benefits, based on values, there is such a possibility. We can find ways, limits for different countries, different governments, active in the European Union. This is the limit up to which solidarity works and from which it stops working. Perhaps there will come a time when we will return to the Christian system, which is rejected today (…) Such a future is not possible for the time being, because the majority of government representatives do not support these values. I regret it very much,’ he added.
Tomasz Sakiewicz also pointed to the threats of the modern world.
‘I am convinced that cooperation between Poland and Hungary will show that it is possible. We have various initiatives and meetings that show that cooperation is possible. A different perspective to look at Europe is possible. We expect others to join us, more of us. What we have achieved in the last 10 years is true solidarity between Poland and Hungary. We support each other on various issues, the Polish and Hungarian governments support each other on the EU forum. It works, it’s true solidarity, it’s not just a slogan,’ Sakiewicz concluded.
