Excise officers unearthed a moonshine still along with over 500 litres of illegally produced alcohol in a forest near Michalow, in the Podlasie province.
The illicit 100-proof moonshine (50 percent alcohol by volume) was hidden in an underground tank in the forest while the still included, two boilers, a cooler, a distillation column and mash containers.
A suspect from the municipality of Grodek, who allegedly supervised the production, has been detained and is facing possible fines and a prison sentence, a press officer from the National Revenue Administration reported on Wednesday.
The illegal production of alcohol has a long tradition in the Podlasie region, where moonshine stills are frequently located, most often in forested areas.
Some of the stills liquidated in recent years had production capabilities reaching up to several thousand litres of alcohol.
