Janusz Kupcewicz played 20 matches in the colours of the white-and-red team, in which he scored five goals. The Polish national team midfielder became particularly famous for his goal against France, which decided the bronze medal at the 1982 World Cup. The team managed by Antoni Piechniczek won 3-2.
“I received the news of Janusz Kupcewicz's death. One of Poland's best playmakers. A few days ago, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the World Cup medal in Spain together. Unbelievable. R.I.P.,” Zbigniew Boniek wrote on Twitter.

Kupcewicz started his football career at Stomil Olsztyn, later he was linked with Arka Gdynia, Lech Poznań, French AS Saint-Étienne and Lechia Gdańsk, among others. He was 66 years old.
