EuroScience Open Forum: Katowice as the European City of Science 2024

Katowice is the first city in Central and Eastern Europe with the title of the European City of Science. Yesterday, the Mayor of Katowice received the key symbolizing that title.

“Today, at the EuroScience Open Forum 2022 (ESOF 2022) taking place in Leiden, during the closing ceremony, I received from Mayor Henri Lenferink the key symbolising the title of European City of Science awarded to Katowice,” Marcin Krupa, the Mayor of Katowice, informed on Facebook yesterday.

“The title of the European City of Science is not just a catchy slogan, the title means that we must step up our efforts and foster change for the benefit of our residents, students and researchers,” he added.

“Another important day for Silesia on the international stage. In Leiden, I attended the EuroScience Open Forum conference. The City Mayor Marcin Krupa officially received the title of European City of Science 2024. Congratulations to the Mayor and the Rectors of the universities in Katowice for their fruitful cooperation,” Jakub Chełstowski, the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship, wrote on Twitter.

“Katowice is the first city in Central and Eastern Europe with the title of the European City of Science. The leader of the project is the University of Silesia in Katowice, which heads a consortium of universities in the region. Organisational support was declared by the authorities of the Silesian Voivodeship and Metropolis GZM.  The title of the European City of Science makes it possible to increase the involvement of the region’s inhabitants and scientific community in solving local and global problems. ESOF 2022 Regional Site is a platform for exchanging experiences and presenting the latest scientific achievements, innovations and technological developments,” we can read on the official ESOF website.

The EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) was founded in 2004 by EuroScience, the non-profit grassroots organization of researchers in Europe. It is a biennial meeting designed to offer the scientific community a platform for interdisciplinary and intersectional debate about scientific culture, scientific research and innovation, for and with society. Since its inception, ESOF has become the largest conference of its kind in Europe. (esof.eu)
