Monika Witkowska is the second Polish woman who won the top of K2

On July 22, 2022 at 5.59 am, after the murderous climbing at night, Monika Witkowska reached the top of K2! K2 is the second highest peak of the Earth that has been so far conquered by only 36 women.36 years ago, Wanda Rutkiewicz was the first Polish woman who managed to do it. Now, Monika Witkowska is the second woman from Poland who has achieved this success and stood at 8,611 meters above sea level!

According to the official Facebook webpage of the K2 summiteer, the mountain was waiting for the second Pole for 36 years. Monika Witkowska tried to start this journey 3 years ago but the pandemic interfered with her plans. Then, the agency withdrew from the expedition and she was forced to change the destination a week before the start of the journey. Eventually, she reached Broad Peak instead.

However, she managed to win the K2 peak yesterday! She posted a picture from the way back:

“Hooray, I managed to get the Internet signal (it’s a miracle!) so I’m quickly uploading the approach to Camp 2 on K2! I can’t say it’s easy, but I’m doing it :)”, Witkowska posted on Instagram.

“The fact that it is snowing and chilling is not an obstacle in taking care of hygiene. The photo shows a Sherpas shower.”, she added.

Today, on July 23, Monika Witkowska is in Camp 3. She’s taking rest and preparing to face other obstacles during the rest of the expedition. She needs to sleep off 2 sleepless nights but she is very proud of herself and thankful. We keep our finger crossed that she will be back safe and sound.
