Workers at the metro construction site found the remains of a powerful animal at a depth of about eight meters underground. The first recognition indicates that it is an aurochs – said the City Hall on Thursday.
The ancestors of the aurochs appeared about 2 million years ago in the Pliocene age in India. From there, the animals spread to Asia and Europe, and to North Africa. The aurochs looked like big cows. The aurochs occurred in dense forests and were not found outside of these forests. In the14th century, one of the few places where they lived was Mazovia. Only the princes had the privilege of hunting for them. From the beginning of the 15th century, the main stronghold of aurochs was the Jaktorowska Forest, which was protected by princes’ treaties. The last Masovian aurochs fell in 1623.
