Piotr Zyla successfully held onto his World Champion title in ski jumping on the normal hill in Planica, despite starting out in 13th place after the first round. His remarkable jump earned him the gold medal!
Piotr Zyla became the World Champion in ski jumping on the normal hill. The Pole defended his title and scored an outstanding attack in the final on Saturday – from 13th to 1st place! The silver medal went to Andreas Wellinger (Germany) and the bronze to Karl Geiger (Germany).
Zyla jumped 97.5 metres in the opening round, ranking him 13th. His most die-hard supporters did not anticipate he would be on the podium. However, in his second attempt, he soared 105 metres, leaving all his opponents in the dust. Despite the intense windy conditions, none of the other contestants was able to come close to that distance, and as a result, the Pole attained the gold medal.
“Piotr Zyla is the first athlete to defend the title at the Nordic World Ski Championships since his countryman Adam Malysz’s back-to-back wins in 2001 and 2003. And it means world to him,” FIS Ski Jumping wrote on Twitter.
Piotr Zyla has achieved his third gold medal at the World Championships. His first was in 2017 when he was part of a team that won in Lahti, Finland. His most recent gold was in 2021 in Oberstdorf on the normal hill.
