Poland and Japan join forces in the hydrogen race: A step towards sustainable energy and economic growth

    Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Poland and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to deepen their collaboration in the production of renewable, low-emission hydrogen and the development of sustainable and affordable supply chains for this resource in energy, transportation, heating, and industry. The signing ceremony, held on May 4, 2023, was attended by Poland’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, and Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Yasutoshi Nishimura.

The agreement aims to increase Japanese companies’ interest in hydrogen investments in Poland and Europe and enhance Poland’s recognition as a country committed to international cooperation in developing zero-emission technologies. Minister Moskwa emphasized that hydrogen could play a significant role in the fair transformation of European economies and contribute to a significant reduction in emissions. Already in 2021, the global hydrogen economy was estimated to be worth around USD 150 billion, with forecasts predicting a rise to USD 220.37 billion in 2028. Poland is one of the countries with the highest hydrogen production capabilities globally, with an annual output of about 1.3 million tons, ranking fifth in the world and third in the EU.

Minister Moskwa underscored Poland’s keen interest in the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies in Japan, which ensure energy sovereignty and security, much needed at present. The signing ceremony followed a meeting between the two ministers to discuss the impact of the war in Ukraine on energy markets, Ukraine’s reconstruction, and current challenges in decarbonization and renewable energy development. The delegations also discussed possibilities for collaboration on innovative solutions for nuclear energy development, including a joint project to develop the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor undertaken by the National Centre for Nuclear Research in cooperation with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

The Memorandum of Cooperation is an essential step towards strengthening Poland and Japan’s cooperation in the hydrogen economy and achieving their shared goals of sustainability, energy security, and innovation. As hydrogen gains traction as a vital energy source for the future, this partnership will position Poland and Japan as leaders in its production, distribution, and application.
