After over two years of construction, the Świna Tunnel has finally been opened, bringing a historic day for the islands of Wolin and Uznam. The President of Świnoujście, Janusz Żmurkiewicz, expressed his excitement, emphasizing the permanent connection this tunnel provides. The significance of the occasion was further emphasized by Vice Prime Minister and Law and Justice Party leader, Jarosław Kaczyński, recalling former President Lech Kaczyński’s belief in the unity, strength, and readiness of the Polish state to undertake important tasks.
The tunnel, which spans approximately 1.5 kilometers and forms part of a 3.2-kilometer investment, aims to enhance transportation for both residents and tourists. Previously, reaching the resort town required ferry crossings, often resulting in long queues and delays. The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of government representatives, local authorities, and parliament members.
Unveiling and Exploration
Following the official proceedings, the tunnel will be open for public viewing, starting at around 2 p.m. A planned run-through and a cyclist procession are scheduled, with subsequent transportation for interested residents and guests provided by tourist vehicles. The tunnel will be accessible for cars in the evening, implementing a speed limit of 50 km/h and monitored by 143 cameras along its route. Compliance with regulations will be ensured through speed monitoring.
The tunnel’s construction cost exceeded 910 million Polish złoty, with over 775 million złoty funded by the European Union and the remaining funds provided by the Świnoujście local government. This project signifies a momentous day, permanently connecting the islands of Uznam and Wolin. By completing this investment, Świnoujście is firmly linked to Poland, as acknowledged by President Żmurkiewicz, quoting former Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński’s affirmation of the tunnel’s importance as a matter of national interest.
