South Korean defense giant Hanwha is looking to establish its European hub in Poland as part of its expansion strategy within the NATO alliance. The company aims to facilitate technology transfer to enable the production of K9 self-propelled howitzers, Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems, and their ammunition in Poland.
Collaborative Defense Efforts
\Hanwha, known for supplying the Polish Army with K9 self-propelled howitzers and K239 Chunmoo rocket launchers, intends to provide crucial support to European armies that use its equipment. The company plans to commence K9 howitzer production in Poland, leveraging the expertise of the Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW), which has experience producing the Polish Krab self-propelled howitzer, a platform related to the K9.
Hanwha’s presence in Poland is not limited to sales; the company aims to establish manufacturing facilities and factories while focusing on technology transfer. The collaboration also extends to the production of artillery ammunition and 80 km-range Chunmoo missiles. Hanwha is eyeing partnerships with Polish defense companies like Mesko, Dezamet, and Nitrochem for these initiatives.
Expanding Workforce and Expertise
Currently, Hanwha employs approximately 50 professionals in Poland, including engineers and R&D specialists. Their goal is to build a substantial presence, further enhancing collaboration with the Polish defense industry.
Hanwha is also involved in the Polish Navy’s Orka program, which aims to acquire submarines. Leveraging their experience in submarine production, Hanwha is exploring possibilities for advanced naval capabilities, such as vertical launch systems and nuclear propulsion, potentially involving Polish shipyards like Remontowa Shipbuilding.
