The Proposed EU Changes and the Controversy Surrounding Them

    Estimated reading time: 1 minute

The European Union’s future is currently in question due to proposed changes that have stirred controversy across the continent. Poland’s Minister of Education and Science, Przemysław Czarnek, has voiced concerns about the potential transformation of the EU into a “superstate,” with Germany and France in dominant roles. The proposed alterations, which would eliminate the unanimity principle in 65 areas of decision-making, have raised alarm bells.

    The Proposed Changes

These changes encompass a substantial transfer of powers from member states to the EU, including the creation of two new exclusive competences for the EU and the expansion of shared competences to cover eight additional policy areas, such as foreign and security policy, border protection, forestry, public health, civil defense, industry, and education.

Minister Czarnek emphasized that such changes would require treaty amendments, necessitating approval through the procedures outlined in the Polish Constitution. This would mean securing the consent of two-thirds of the parliament or holding a referendum.

    Concerns and Controversy

Czarnek warned that this shift towards a superstate led by Germany and France could potentially lead to unrest in Europe and, ultimately, the EU’s downfall. This proposal has ignited a contentious debate about the EU’s future direction.
