An independent campaign, “I Don’t Give to Owsiak, I Support Republica,” initiated by Gazeta Polska Clubs and Republica TV viewers, has sparked controversy. This grassroots movement arose from frustrations over unaddressed issues, such as inadequate flood victim aid and the perceived politicization of Jerzy Owsiak’s Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP). Critics claim the WOŚP misallocated public funds and unduly influenced Poland’s 2023 elections, further fueling calls for a boycott.
Tusk’s Response and Public Reaction
Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the campaign, accusing Republica of fostering divisiveness. On social media, he likened Republica’s efforts to “funding media filled with hatred.” However, his comments backfired, with users criticizing the government’s handling of aid and questioning WOŚP’s financial transparency.
Republica TV’s editor-in-chief, Tomasz Sakiewicz, responded with biting criticism of Tusk’s leadership, accusing him of alienating the public and fostering resentment. Quoting Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis, Sakiewicz likened Tusk’s governance to a theatrical farce, suggesting he has lost the trust and love of the people.
The exchange highlights deep divisions in Poland’s political and social landscape, reflecting wider dissatisfaction and polarization.
