The construction of the barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border should begin as soon as possible, believes the deputy head of the Ministry of National Defense, Wojciech Skurkiewicz. “I am convinced that the urgency of this project is so high and serious that it will be implemented by several entities,” he said.
The draft governmental bill on this matter was dealt with by the Sejm on Wednesday (13 Oct). Skuriewicz was asked on TVP 1 when, in his opinion, the construction of the barrier on the Polish border would begin. The politician replied that as soon as possible.
He emphasized that this was to be served by the parliamentary consideration of the bill as a matter of urgency, which – as he emphasized – meant that the Senate would also have a shortened time to two weeks to deal with it.
“Then we proceed to these actions without undue delay,” stressed the deputy minister, emphasizing that the entire project is the responsibility of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. He expressed the belief that preliminary preparatory work “concerning this installation and construction area” was underway. As he stated, “it will be an installation that will permanently defend our border, not like the one that was put together by the Polish army, a temporary installation.”
Skurkiewicz was also asked when the construction of this protection was to be completed.
“It is difficult for me to judge at the moment, the act has deadlines. I am convinced that the urgency of this project is so high and serious that it will be implemented by several entities or in several places, because the border, especially its land area, is very long, because in total the Polish-Belarusian border is 418 km, and we are talking about this particularly sensitive border area, about 170-180 km of land border,” he said.
