The German ambassador to Poland, Miguel Berger, has sparked a diplomatic scandal by accusing MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk of actions that “only help Putin.” The attack came in response to Mularczyk’s proposal that the ambassador familiarize himself with the report on Poland’s wartime losses. Yet, as Niezależna.pl revealed, Berger himself – back in 2019, while serving as a high-ranking official in the German government – defended Russian energy interests, opposed sanctions on Gazprom, and promoted cooperation with Moscow as “necessary and beneficial.”
A sharp dispute erupted yesterday on X. In response to the ambassador’s interview with TVN24 – where Berger suggested that the issue of reparations harms Polish-German relations – MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk offered to personally provide him with the report on Poland’s wartime losses. Miguel Berger’s reaction was immediate and shocking.
“Dear Sir, you are mistaken if you think that your ‘report’ and your activism will shape the future of our relations. The constant divisions created by people like you only help Putin,” wrote the German ambassador.
These words sparked outrage, and Mularczyk replied that such a reaction “shows a complete denial of history and of Germany’s responsibility for starting World War II,” suggesting that the ambassador should return to Berlin.
The ambassador’s arrogant lecturing of Poles and his accusations of favoring Russia stand in stark contradiction to his own past actions and statements. According to a report by editor Teresa Wójcik for BiznesAlert.pl dated June 6, 2019, Miguel Berger – then a director in the German Ministry of Economy – was one of the leading defenders of German-Russian energy interests.
During the Three Seas Initiative Summit in Slovenia, Berger engaged in a heated exchange with U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, who warned Europe about “energy blackmail from the East” and emphasized the need to diversify energy sources.
The German government representative, Miguel Berger, explicitly defended the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline. As the article states, he “categorically rejected the American argument that Nord Stream 2 poses a threat to Europe’s energy security.”
What’s more, Berger openly protested against U.S. sanctions targeting Russia and its gas giant. The journalist wrote that he “opposed sanctions against Russia and Gazprom.” Berger went even further, making a claim that today sounds almost like a mockery: “Berger stressed that energy cooperation with Russia is necessary and beneficial for Europe.”
The German official even conditioned the potential import of American LNG on whether it would be more profitable than supplies from Russia – effectively putting Berlin’s economic interests above the security of the entire region.
